On April 25 and 26, 1986, the worst nuclear accident in history happen in Ukraine. a reactor at a nuclear power plant exploded and burned. More than 30 years on, scientists estimate the zone around the former plant will not be habitable for up to 20,000 years.
On that day, routine maintenance was scheduled at V.I. Lenin Nuclear Power Station’s fourth reactor and workers planned to use the downtime to test whether the reactor could still be cooled if the plant lost power. During the test, however, workers violated safety protocols and power surged inside the plant. Despite attempts to shut down the reactor entirely, another power surge caused a chain reaction of explosions inside. Finally, the nuclear core itself was exposed, spewing radioactive material into the atmosphere.
Impact:
On 27 April 1986, the town of Pripyat was evacuated, many of the people suffer headaches, vomiting, and other radiation-related sicknesses.
Many people suffer from various cancer.
The doctor advises women to abort their unborn children because of fear of birth defects.
Some cattle born after the event exhibited signs of radioactive mutation and birth defects.
The area of four square miles became “Red Forest” because so many trees turn reddish-brown and die after absorbing a high level of radiation.
Birds living in that area found to develop smaller brain.
Childers in that area develop thyroid cancer outbreaks caused by the absorption of iodine-131 into the thyroid gland.
Down syndrome was at the peak.
Some flora and fauna survive and some cases benefit from the radiation. For example, a fungus exists that uses radiation to produce its energy source much the same way solar panels use sunlight. These radio trophic fungi perform radio synthesis using melanin pigment to convert gamma radiation into chemical energy growth.
