History of Home gaming

First electronic home gaming media started from an American company named ATARI. Who then used to make arcade machines.

You may recognize for making Home pong and ATARI Breakout

The first game they made was called Home Pong. It was aimed towards the whole family and it was a huge success.

So atari made a gaming system in which you inserted cartridge storage which contained games, and it was another success by Atari.

During the first year games doing great. Notable games from then include Breakout, Home Pong, Space invaders, Badai Namko’s Pac man. But then Atari allowed third-party developers to make games for their system, and It was a seriously bad move. Within a few months, the market was filled with cheap quality games which were usually movie-themed games. They were usually rushed to release on the same day as the movie, and there was no internet to watch the review of a game then. So, you were just doing a gamble trying to buy a game. But one game named E.T, proved to be a disaster.

It was called the worst video game of all time, and caused people to return that game. A large quantity of these games was returned and this made Atari stop their operations as they were almost bankrupt.

For most people, videogames were dead then and in the history this event as known as the Videogame recession of 1983.

Meanwhile, in Japan(the land of robots) there was no atari. So, no videogames recession. There was a small company known by the name of Nintendo making a system similar to Atari’s 2600.

It was called the Nintendo Family Computer or popularly knows as the FAMICOM. They were doing great in Japan and grew pretty huge. So they decided to go multinational and turned to the US

but only knowing that no retailer wanted to sell it because according to them Videogames were dead. So Nintendo took note of the game industry and did a few things.

  1. Made the Nintendo seal of approval. This means that the game has been tested and is not buggy or boring.
  2. To get in the market they portrayed Videogames as a toy accurately Boys toys to get retailers to buy them.
  3. Removed the name Famicom for their console and Named it the Nintendo Entertainment System. Popularly knows as the NES.

Because of Nintendo, gaming for anyone who is not a boy of age 5 to 10 became socially unacceptable. Things were going right. We then got the Super NES which was NES but with better graphics with Sega trying to rival it with the Genesis(popular games, Sonic the hedgehog, Toy story).

Then came the 3d era of the 1990s and 2000s with Nintendo still going with their policy of games for boys with Nintendo 64 and Sega basically dead with the loss Dreamcast (popular game, crazy taxi, Sonic Run) made.

But Nintendo grew some more rivals with Sony popping up with their PlayStation, PlayStation was also with the boys game ideas with games like Crash Bandicoot. But a few games like Metal Gear Solid and resident evil popped up during this era making a small dent that adults can play videogames too.

This bump grew into a huge hole when the PlayStation 2 arrived, with Microsoft also stepping into the warzone with the Xbox.

Xbox’s main title was the Halo: Combat evolved, which is given legendary status by its fans. While PlayStation 2 had none, but PlayStation 2 had another superpower it was able to play DVD without any attachment or remote needed, and it was cheaper than other DVD players. While Xbox required a remote attachment to do it.

While many cross-platform games like GTA 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Resident Evil 3 were on both sides. Which made the impression that videogames were for adults too. But they failed to do a large bump. Videogames were then considered for people from 5 to 25 years. This made the people who didn’t play videogames not understand it and became confused and started viewing videogame as a cause of violence due to a large amount of violence added to them to make them suited for “Boys”. While videogames started becoming more realistic. People who didn’t play videogames started getting depressions that their child was murdering people in the game for having fun, that’s where media kicks, in order to make more money media usually writes on recent topics on videogame violence, was a concern as people didn’t understand them. So to make money media started calling videogames as violent and said that it makes the player psychopath, and other media started copying it and usually, news and stuff like that is aimed towards people who are adults. So the media started making fake news about their topics on videogames to enforce their news.

Which made people believe that Videogames are violent.
