Earth Sister: Venus

Venus is the second planet of our solar system (It is the second closest to our sun). The first spacecraft set mechanical feet on Venus is the former Soviet Union’s Venera probes (In the 1970s). But it cannot stay their longer because of Venus’s high temperature and pressure. In December 1970, for instance, the Venera 8 lander transmitted atmospheric data for more than 50 minutes after its turbulent touchdown. Venus is a massive pressure cooker.

It is the hottest planet of our solar system. Its atmosphere is made up of carbon dioxide with clouds of sulfuric acid, which traps the Sun’s heat and creates a greenhouse effect. Its temperature is over 465◦C hot enough to melt lead. The pressure is 90 times more than earth. Venus has only one season: HOT.

Venus and mercury, is the only planet in our solar system without moon.

Venus and Uranus, spin in the opposite direction. Venus travels around the sun once every 225 Earth days but it rotates clockwise once every 243 days. So if you lived on Venus, your days would be longer than your years (and the Sun would rise in the west).

Opposite direction rotation is due to a large crater impact. Which pull the rotation backward and destroy its ecosystem.

Despite the strange and scorching conditions, Venus shares a surprising number of features with Earth. Measuring 7,520 miles across, Venus is roughly the same diameter as our home planet. It also has a similar structure, sporting a rocky surface and an iron core, although the planet doesn’t rotate fast enough to generate an Earth-like magnetic field.
