Black fungus is a disease caused by Mucorales Fungi. It is an Air born infection that infects upper or lower airways and is associated with sinusitis, rhinocerebral mucormycosis, or pulmonary infection. It can widely spread up to the skin, brain, and other sites. If patients do not receive aggressive medical treatment it can also infect contiguous sites. Some people have innate immunity to this group of fungi.

Case Study: A 41- year old man with a history of type 1 diabetes mellitus diagnosed with COVID-19 infection. At first, he was treated with steroid and hydroxychloroquine. Then he was treated with intravenous (IV) fluids (Liquid given to replace water, sugar, and salt) and an insulin drip for his diabetic ketoacidosis. COVID-19 pneumonia resolved during his stay in the hospital. But he develops rhinocerebral mucormycosis (Black Fungus) and had surgery to remove it.

An increase in the level of steroids could be the cause of the infection in immunocompromised individuals.
