Russian Vaccine: Sputnik V

Russia says it is ready to approve the first-ever coronavirus vaccine. It will be first offered to front line health care workers but large scale trial phase 3 will only begin after the approval. That decision is raising widespread concern.

The WHO and the Russian Association of Clinical Research Organisation protest for this departure from standard procedure. Health care and health decisions should be the same around the world. The one thing all of us in every society will agree on our own personal health because we all are the same when it comes to our body and physiology.

In phase 3 clinical trial vaccine are given to thousands of people to observe the safety. WHO says Russia has not published vaccine data since the phase 1 trial in June on 38 people. So, it is an unproven vaccine from that stand point. Russian Association of Clinical Research Organization says ‘It is a cruel violation of clinical research, Russian law, and universally accepted international norms’.

It is really risky in a way that basically includes front line workers in phase 3 clinical trial. Health care workers already putting their life at risk we really need them to stay healthy. We can’t afford to add additional risk to front line workers. If all of a sudden people do not wear mask and PPE while they are on the front line taking care of who are already infected all of a sudden all the health care workers are infected. This could be a major problem.
